Matcha Chia Smoothie

I am a child of the eighties, in the 80's we didn't have the word "smoothie", but the word "shake" to describe a cold, frothy mixed drink containing loads of nutrition. The realization that my generation didn't have the word "smoothie" hit me as I listened to a little girl explaining to her friend what an Icee was while surrounded by hundreds of mini-people at family camp up north. The one little girl explained to the other little girl the blue and red icey concoction was a "smoothie", which we children of the 80's know as "Icee's." And I suddenly felt very, very old. Which made me strengthen my resolve to drink youth-inducing potions full of nutrition - like this one! Matcha, Chia, Chaga, Whey, Maca! All of these super, healthy powders has me feeling young and fresh, I'm suddenly transported back to the eighties, listening to my Madonna cassette tape, badly wishing my mom knew how to pile my bangs atop my head into a Aqua-Net'd pouf, dressed in a fluorescent pink shirt you blew on to turn it purple. Remember? 

Chaga, Chia, Matcha, Whey Protein, Maca - What are all these powdery elixirs, you wonder? I'm no physician or in no way educated in nutrition or health, just really interested in the chemistry lab of my body. Chaga is a mushroom that is found in the wild and full of nutrients. Read more about it here. I get it here. Chia is a seed that is full of omega-3 fatty acids and fiber. Whey protein is the only protein powder I like, because it only has one ingredient: whey protein. I like this one. Maca is a powdered root that the ancient Peruvian's thought was an aphrodisiac. Anything to lift my mood, sign me up! This is the one I have, and you only use a pinch, so the bag will last you a long time. 
Matcha! A green tea in powder form - full of antioxidants and age-defying yumminess. I'm not sure how I'll use this little jar of green goodness, but I'm certainly going to do this

Matcha Chia Smoothie

Yield: 2 smoothies

1 banana, peeled
1 cup strawberries, sliced
2/3 cup Greek yogurt
1/2 cup milk
2 tablespoons whey protein powder
2 teaspoons matcha powder
1 tablespoon chia seeds, plus additional for serving
1/2 teaspoon chaga powder
1/2 teaspoon maca powder
3 or 4 cubes ice

Place all ingredients in a blender. Whir on high speed for a minute or two, until combined. Pour into large glasses, top with additional chia seeds and strawberry garnish. Serve immediately.
